Our favorite shallow grass flats near Nassau, why the turtles gather there, and how to share the water respectfully.
Green sea turtles are creatures of habit. They feed on seagrass, they like calm, shallow water, and once they find a flat they like, they come back to it day after day. Lucky for us, some of the best flats in the Bahamas sit a short run from Nassau Harbour.
We anchor down-current, brief everyone on the rules — no touching, no chasing, no blocking a turtle’s path to the surface — and slip in quietly. The turtles keep grazing. If you float still and breathe slow, they’ll surface right beside you.
The water here is six to ten feet deep and clear as a swimming pool, which makes it perfect for first-time snorkelers and kids. Our crew is in the water with you the whole time.
Every season we recognize returning turtles by the notches on their shells. They were here long before us, and taking care of this spot is part of the job.
